He brought with him a 1978 Yamaha 750 Triple Special which had been owned since new by his late brother and hadn’t been ridden in 6 years. Steve restored the bike and then a year later rode the bike alone to Denver, and gave it to his other brother. It is still in the family after 31 years. Now, according to Google maps it is a two day, 1175 mile trip from Brentwood to Denver, but according to Steve it is 1,869 miles, takes five days and requires you to camp along the White River in Arkansas, see salt water pelicans in the Great Salt Plains, Cherokee, Oklahoma, ride your bike on a wooden planked bridge above the 1000 foot deep Royal Gorge in Colorado, cross the Continental Divide twice on gravel roads, and enter Denver from the west. That was his first overnight trip ever on a motorcycle. His most recent trip eight years later was a 12 day, 2200 mile circumnavigation of the South Island of New Zealand with good friends he met through the BMWMCON. The route included side trips to Lands End (the southernmost point) Mt. Cook (the highest point), Milford Sound (one of -the wettest points) which included a boat trip out on the Tasman Sea, and rainforest at the foot a glacier.

Currently Steve rides about 10,000 miles a year on his K1200LT (his second BMW), his “little all-purpose” bike - a Yamaha TDM 850, and a very fast Yamaha FZ1. In his spare (non-riding) time Steve enjoys Target and Skeet shooting and runs an Internet software applications company as he continues his slow recovery from being a Chicago lawyer. He lives in Brentwood with two Pointers (one dog and one bitch from the same litter - note if they were both bitches they would be the Pointer Sisters). Linda (my wife of 41 years) and I enjoy attending sporting events, dinner with friends and traveling, with ‘no schedule’ bed and breakfast trips being our most favorite. I have enjoyed playing golf, collecting baseball cards and Stephen King books. There is little better than attending a NASCAR race in Daytona, Atlanta, or Bristol. I love to read and much of Linda and my life together have revolved around renovating old houses in wonderful downtown neighborhoods. We especially love living close to downtown in East Nashville and the ability to walk to dinner, the park and a Titans game. I really enjoy my wood shop and its man cave retreat.

However, Linda says nothing compares to my motorcycle obsession. A late convert to motorcycling (age 54), I particularly enjoy long distance travel. I have recently taken trips to Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and New York and in 2009 both BMWMOA and RA rallies including the rolling rally in between. During the past 6 years, I have averaged about 10,000 miles per year on my bikes. After several years with my original bike, a R1200C, I now ride a R1200RT to better take advantage of the long distance comfort and great roads in the area. When I mentioned this to my father, he suggested an older model airhead BMW. Since then, I have been fortunate enough to own an R80RT, R100RS, K75S, and an R1100R. My current ride is a Kawasaki KLR 650 for dual-sport riding but am on the prowl for the next BMW to add to my list of 'have owned one of those'. In my earliest memories, it seems that I was always interested in machinery regardless of the type. My first experience on motorized two wheels was on a friend’s mini-bike. We wore that bike out even setting up jumps over his driveway. About that same time, my grandfather bought a Harley- Davidson motor scooter with a sidecar. Deciding I needed to get myself a mini-bike I began saving my money. However, by the time I saved enough money to get the mini-bike, a friend of my parents whose son was twelve years older and getting married was selling his racing cart. I ended up buying the racing cart (top speed 120 mph).

It was several years later before I purchased my first motorcycle, a Honda 350. I kept it a few years and sold it to help pay for my travel to Europe. One week after my older sister married, I was off on my journey. While working in Paris, I saw and rode my first BMW. It was an R90. Needless to say, a year later after I returned to Tennessee, I went to Reese in Shelbyville and bought my first BMW which was a R75/6. Some years later while looking at the ads in the newspaper, I found a R50/5 for sale. It only had 4,000 miles on it even though it was 14 years old.

Eventually, with life changes such as children, the bikes were sold. As the children became older they too developed an interest in cycles after cutting their teeth on a go-cart. Their first bike was a Honda 50, then a Honda 100 dirt bike. (Do you think there is the possibility that I was reliving my childhood?) The three boys all have bikes today.

Finally, I was able to get my own bike again. After researching the various models of BMWs, I decided that the bike I wanted was the GS. One of the more appealing aspects of the GS was the ability to load it up with gear. I used to do a lot of backpacking in my younger years, but with age come pains one did not have previously. So instead of carrying my gear on my back, I now have a bike I can carry it on.

I was actually a member of our club in the late 80s before I moved to Knoxville for graduate school. After moving back to Franklin, I did not think about the club until one day I ran into a fellow BMW rider in the parking lot of a grocery store. During our conversation he mentioned the club although he was not a member. He telephoned me when he returned home and gave me Terry Elliot’s number. I called Terry and he told me to call Polly. Polly and Carson were names I remembered from the past. Obviously, I telephoned Polly and here I am today.
", TITLE, 'Sam Weiland');
